I’m watching anime where a group of women are fighting a monster. The monster grabs one woman by the legs and pulls her apart. She’s left gaping at where her stomach and lower body used to be. There’s smooth concave of flesh missing from her chest down.

I’m at a table looking at some toys. I pick up a small cube and look through the attached viewfinder. Inside is a tiny diorama with a scene from Star Wars played out by little Lego figures. There are three small buttons on the bottom of the cube. One makes a tiny die on the floor of the diorama roll. Another makes Darth Vader pop up from the floor. The third makes a God-like figure appear.

I’m sharing a hotel room with a few other guys at someone’s wedding. A woman who I don’t know calls me and tells me that Scotty, someone else at the wedding, just died. She asks me to put her in contact with one of his friends. I tell her I’ll give her the number of this other guy. After hanging up with her, I go out to the deck where I find the other guy. He’s a post-frat surfer guy. I say to him, “I’ve just given your number to a girl.” “Oh yeah?” He seems happy about it. I decide to break the news to him myself. “You know Scotty the surfer? He just died.” The other guy thinks about this for a moment, then, as if suddenly remembering, says, “He died last week.” I ask him why people are just now talking about it. He says, “These things always happen briskly.”

Later, It’s late at night as Susannah, Tom and I lie in bed discussing plans. I tell them that I’ll go pick up Adam and Tamara at the airport since I’d like to get out of the hotel room.

I’m with a child on the roof of a building. We’re trying to get to the bottom. We both strap on parachutes but we take the stairs down instead of jumping. We get down several floors when we encounter a restaurant on the 3rd floor. There’s some obstacle we can’t get past. A waitress comes out and suggests we use the parachutes now. I tell her we can’t just jump one story using parachutes. She pulls a lever and the floor falls away to the level below. We open our parachutes and jump safely to the round floor.

I’m watching some music videos on TV. One features a bunch of women sexually teasing a young boy. There’s no music playing. We see a well-tanned Phoebe Cates in the shower. She’s rubbing her breasts while pouting. A man approaches her and starts caressing her breasts. In this medium shot, we can tell he’s entered her and they’re having sex standing up. The shot pulls back to reveal a hardcore shot of him fucking her. It looks like a realistic looking dildo is fucking her in motion to the man, who is standing a ways away. It’s as if he has a 2-foot penis but the middle part of it is invisible.

I get very excited at seeing Phoebe Cates naked and surprised that this channel is showing hardcore. I want to watch more but realize I’m running late. The clock says 10:30AM. I run to the bedroom to look for a folder and get dressed.

Suddenly there are lots of people in the room and a European man with a Polaroid camera is revealing some sort of practical joke played on a man in the room. He calls me over to have my picture taken with the man. We also take a picture with his best friend. Then the camera guy calls over a guy named Craig, who nobody seems to like. In the picture, nobody will pose close to him. He seems a little surprised. The camera guy hands out pictures as they develop. He then loads a new batch of film. The film comes out of the camera all at once in a stack. Camera guy hands me a picture he took of me earlier. It’s a shot from above where I’m sitting in the kitchen watching TV. He says, “Looks like something is captivating the Japanese.” Being the only Asian man in the room, I assume he thinks I’m Japanese.

I’m in the bathroom with Susannah. There’s a medium sized snapping turtle in the room with us. We’re both afraid of getting bitten by it. I grab it and throw it into the tub. I start pouring different shampoos into its mouth, trying to kill it. Susannah tells me it’s cruel to do it this way. I ask her, “What do you want me to do, slit its throat with a knife?” She finally gets fed up and grabs a knife but doesn’t know if she can do it.

I’m in a long line with Wei Ming & Tamara. I say to Wei Ming, “Hey, what if I made a movie called American History Eggs?” She’s distracted and talking to Tamara about something else. We hear a raucous behind us in line. Some parents are laughing because their kid slid out of their backpack carrier.

I’m standing on a ladder trying to get some boxes up into an attic. I’m halfway in the entry way and I’m perched precariously on the ladder, in danger of falling. I can’t see down into the lower level because of all these stacked boxes. I see a woman’s name on one of the boxes, someone I know. I start yelling for someone to help me. The woman is below me and starts removing boxes so I can get back down the ladder. As I descend, I watch the boxes tumble. They knock down displays of toys hanging on the walls.

Later, Michelle is giving me a toy to give to Everett. It’s a medium-sized Japanese robot toy. I tell her it reminds of me a classic 70s giant robot from Japan. I tell her that Gundam Wing (even though I mean something else) started the whole giant robot genre just like Miyazaki began the whole robot boy genre with Astro Boy. I start telling her about how I grew up with fond memories of watching Astro Boy as a kid. “One day I walk into a comic book store. They were showing old Astro Boy episodes from the 60s. I suddenly realized that what I had grown up with was a newer series, colorized for the 80s, and not the original black & white series from the 60s.”

I’m listening in on some people in a bar (maybe lawyers) talking about the Letterman murder case. They’re speculating on whether or not David Letterman’s mom is capable of calling a murder hit.

I’m visiting Everett at daycare. Tom and I discuss his progress compared to other kids. Everett asks Tom for a few feathers. I ask Tom if this is the first time he’s asked for something very specific that wasn’t food or a toy.

I’m with some people about to visit Michelle’s parents over the holidays. I go into her neighbor’s house and they are surprised (but not alarmed) to see us. They tell us Michelle’s not back yet. We tell them we’ll wait.

My mom is in town and is calling me from my apartment. We’re elsewhere and ask her to come find us. She’s lugging around a big bag and I tell her to ring the super and leave it with them.

I’m outside a hotel or mall watching as a huge march/parade is underway. It’s a spontaneous showing of resistance against the republican administration. There’s a festive atmosphere as people march, cheering and singing. I go back inside to get more film for my camera (a fancy SLR). Inside my hotel room, an older man (Chris Hapka’s dad?) gives me advice about the camera. I go out to the deck to tell Susannah I’m going back out to shoot. I head up some stairs but miss the deck where Susannah is sitting. Outside, I notice I have a large artist’s portfolio with me. I spot Tom and ask him to take it back to Susannah for me.

As I shoot, I notice that when I use the flash, the image in the viewfinder becomes very high contrast.

I get very caught up in the energy of the spontaneous march and feel elated that liberals are finally showing some strength.

I’m in a darkened theater with Susannah. There’s a middle-aged black woman presiding over a contest. She’s asking the audience to vote on their favorite of 4 banners/flags. The first one she holds up is ours and we hoot and cheer along with much of the audience. The second one gets a little less applause. The third one only gets one guy yelling. He says something about wanting to have sex with the woman who made it. The black woman threatens to come over and beat him up.

Tuesday, November 11th, 2003

I’m traveling with a young man and a young woman. We end up in a colorful neighborhood playground. It’s crowded with adults and kids. We’re trying to plan a kidnapping but I keep trying to convince the others that there are better, less risky ways to make money.

Friday, November 7th, 2003

I’ve been dating another woman and Susannah eventually finds out. At first she’s angry but then she resigns herself to the fact that I have to get it out of my system.

The other woman and I are sitting in a restaurant trying to figure out where we are. We’re trying to draw a map on the back of a piece of paper. She starts writing street names on the map we’ve drawn but I think she’s wrong. We argue intensely and she starts condescending to me. I get pissed and slam the table, saying, “I’m not arguing with you just to impress you!”

I storm off to find the bathroom. I’m behind an old man as we approach two bathroom doors. They’re both old wooden doors with no signs on them. He opens the door and notices it’s very dark inside. A woman walks into the other bathroom. The old man lingers inside the door, not sure what to do. I get irritated and pull on a cord, lighting up the room. He stands ambling toward one stall while I dart into another.

I’m watching a movie with Patricia Clarkson and Oliver Platt (that’s not Pieces of April).

I answer the phone at home and it’s some guy calling about buying/selling DVDs. At first I can’t figure out if he wants to buy or sell. He says he wants to open his own store but then says he’s interested in selling DVDs. The call is lost and I hang up, expecting him to call back.

I’m watching short film called “Sunday.” A young white couple with model looks is standing by a pool. They look down to see a woman floating/swimming just beneath the water. She looks like the woman standing near it only with brown hair instead of blonde. The couple speculates on whether or not the floating woman is dead. There’s also a man in the pool. The blonde woman begins suspecting her partner of having killed the brunette and thinks he’ll kill her too. She begins making passive-aggressive remarks to him.

She starts wading into the pool, turning to face him. They’re talking about plans and how they’ll both be working late. As the woman wades backwards into the pool, she holds a microphone. She tells the man that after a nice dinner and making her father rich, she’ll enter the pool with this microphone, except that it’ll be plugged in. She sounds very fatalistic and the man is surprised.

The movie is over and the credits start to roll over a shot of the pool. The actress playing the blonde is named Rebecca Stewart. We see the brunette in the pool, swimming slowly just below the surface, the man just behind her. They are both nude. She floats to the surface, her perfect ass breaking over the water. The man dog-paddles behind her with his hands on her ass, pushing her along.

I’m in an old school building (that reminds me of Grand Central Station) looking for a bathroom. I go into a private faculty bathroom using a key a teacher game me. There’s a student sleeping or studying under one urinal. I go to the other urinal to pee. I notice there’s a set of keys on the floor by my feet. I make a note of turning those in to lost and found.

Saturday, November 1st, 2003

I’m in side some building with someone (maybe Susannah) after hours. I’m prowling around plotting something but notice that some lights are on. We go to the lobby and I see a coat and gloves belonging to a coworker. Susannah asks if they belong to Keith (from BBC’s The Office). I tell her no because he wears a black coat. We decide not to do whatever we were plotting since there’s someone here.

I’m in bed watching a couple of naked girls making out. One of them sits up from the bed, fingering herself, leaving little wet spots on the sheets. This gets me very excited. I beg the girl (now Susannah) to come inside her.
